The British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO) is a top-tier mathematics competition for secondary school students, organized by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT). As the core pathway for selecting members of the UK's national team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), it has been renowned since its inception for its extremely high difficulty, rigorous selection standards, and widespread international recognition. It is hailed as the "touchstone of British mathematical geniuses" and is considered a "golden academic endorsement" for applying to STEM majors at G5 super elite universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.
The BMO competition is considered top-tier in prestige. In the UK, top universities like Oxford and Cambridge (G5) prioritize BMO scores for mathematics and engineering programs, giving them a significant advantage in interviews and sometimes even offering reduced score requirements or early interview opportunities. In North America, top STEM universities like MIT and Caltech consider it as important as the AMC-AIME system, significantly enhancing application competitiveness. It is also an authoritative testament to mathematical ability; preparation and participation systematically improve core skills such as abstract modeling and logical reasoning, laying a foundation for university STEM studies. Furthermore, the competition is extremely rare; only about a thousand people worldwide qualify for BMO1, and the BMO2 qualification rate is a mere 10%, making participation itself a top-tier achievement. In addition, BMO2 qualifiers gain access to high-quality resources such as Cambridge training camps and international academic exchanges, further highlighting its value.
Involving multiple mathematical fields such as algebra, geometry, combinatorial mathematics, number theory, etc. Algebraic Part: Polynomials, functions, sequences and series; Geometry: Plane geometry, solid geometry; Number theory part: Integers and congruence, prime numbers and composite numbers; Combinatorial Mathematics Section: Permutations and combinations, basics of graph theory.
