Introduction to the AMC American Mathematical Thinking Activity Mathematics Competition
AMC (American Mathematics Competition) is aMathematical Association of America (MAA)The world's top academic competition hosted by the China University of Political Science and Law has developed into an authoritative event with a history of more than 70 years since its establishment in 1950.It attracts over 600,000 students from around the world to participate each year. The test questions are jointly formulated by experts from top universities such as Harvard, MIT, and Princeton.Known for its rigor and innovation,It is recognized as one of the most reliable and valid mathematics assessments in the world.BothThe cornerstone of talent selection for the United States Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO),It is also a core reference indicator for top universities in the UK and the US to assess the mathematical ability of applicants.
The American Mathematical Competition (AMC), led by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and featuring questions from top universities such as Harvard, MIT, and Princeton, boasts over 70 years of history and enjoys extremely high academic credibility. Its questions are designed to avoid exceeding the curriculum while deeply assessing mathematical reasoning and logic, and are used as a standard for assessing mathematical ability by over 5000 primary and secondary schools and educational institutions worldwide. The AMC attracts over 600,000 students globally each year, forming a highly valuable global ranking system. Unlike regional competitions, the AMC's scoring standards and rankings are globally consistent, allowing students to clearly understand their mathematical level within their international peer group.
AMC American Mathematical Thinking Activities
AMC8
For students in Grade 8 and below, this 40-minute exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions assessing foundational knowledge in algebra, geometry, and related subjects. The top 25% globally receive an Honorary Award. Scores serve as a key reference for admission to international schools, cultivate mathematical thinking, and lay the groundwork for future competitions. The event attracts numerous elementary and middle school students annually.
AMC10/12
The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below, while the AMC 12 is for students in 12th grade and below. Both exams last 75 minutes and consist of 25 questions. The former covers topics like solid geometry, while the latter includes number theory proofs. The top 2.5% globally for AMC 10 and top 5% for AMC 12 advance to the AIME, serving as a key advantage in applications to top universities.
AIME
This invitation-only competition is open to AMC10/12 qualifiers and requires efficient solution to 15 problems. It focuses on complex mathematical problems. Those scoring 8 or higher have the opportunity to be recommended for MIT's research program. This competition demonstrates advanced mathematical ability, helps prepare for USAMO competition, and is a key advancement path for top mathematicians.
