The USABO (United States Biology Olympiad) is a top-tier global high school biology competition organized by the CEE. Introduced to China in 2016 (referred to as BIO-USACN in China), it has become a significant advantage for university admissions in biology-related fields. Participants are high school students in grades 9-12 worldwide, and the competition covers multiple modules including animal physiology, cell biology, and genetics and evolution, with a difficulty level approaching undergraduate standards. Chinese students only participate in the first round of the open competition. Awards are judged according to global standards, with a gold medal corresponding to a top 101 TP3T globally. Furthermore, it highly overlaps with standardized tests such as AP and IB, enhancing university competitiveness and bridging the gap between university courses and research.
USABO is officially recognized by the IBO and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) as the sole pathway for selecting the U.S. team for the IBO. Its gold medal is awarded to only the top 10% globally, with intense competition in the Chinese division where the gold threshold typically requires answering over 85% of questions correctly. Ivy League institutions like Harvard and MIT, alongside G5 universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, highly value this achievement. For instance, in MIT's Bioengineering admissions, award recipients see an approximately 37% higher acceptance rate than regular applicants. It also boosts scores on standardized tests like AP and IB. Award winners gain access to international research projects and laboratory internships, making it a core asset for pursuing biology-related majors.
