EE (extended essay)
The research paper is about 4,000 words. Students choose a subject from six subject groups to conduct in-depth independent research. TOK (Theory of Knowledge)
This interdisciplinary course explores the nature, source, acquisition and connection between different knowledge fields, and thinks about "how to know". Teaching includes knowledge classification, cognitive methods and fields, and assessment includes a 1,600-word essay and oral presentation.
Difficulties of IA EE TOK
Challenges in writing papers:
High knowledge and skills required:TOK, EE and IA all involve essay writing, which requires students to have a strong level of knowledge, logical thinking and expression skills. It is quite difficult for high school students, and the 10-minute speech in the TOK assessment is even more challenging.
Teaching and research time is limited:
EE has less class time:Most schools do not arrange special class time for EE like they do for TOK, and students mainly rely on completing it in their spare time. EE estimated time is not enough:IBO estimates that it will take students about 40 hours to complete the EE, but considering the workload of the EE, such as collecting first-hand data, 40 hours is often unable to meet actual needs.
Teacher Guidance Limitations:
IBO stipulates that teachers can only revise one draft for IA and can only provide 4 hours of guidance for EE. Although some teachers may provide extra guidance time and revision times, overall the prescribed guidance time may not be enough for most students.
IA and EE data usage limits:
Data cannot be reused:EEs cannot use data from classroom experiments or IA experiments for their own data analysis, as this violates the "double dipping" principle. IBO takes this very seriously and strictly prohibits repeated submission of the same materials.
Be careful when choosing a topic:
Avoid repeating topics:In addition to violating the "double dipping" principle, IA is usually shorter, while EE requires about 4,000 words. It is difficult to meet the EE length requirement relying solely on IA experimental data. Even in-depth data mining to expand the length will increase the difficulty of EE. Violating this principle has serious consequences. Students must weigh the pros and cons and bear the consequences themselves.
